#3447 swamp update: show download progress and handle stalled downloads
Opened by jpisgeek-skillable · 10/14/2026· Shipped 10/14/2026
swamp update prints nothing while it downloads. On a slow network it ran 20+ minutes at 18–160 KB/s with no output, so it looked hung. I had to inspect the temp file to see it was still downloading.
Requests:
- Show download progress (bytes, total size, speed).
- Show an error if the download stalls or fails.
- Resume or retry a stopped download instead of starting over.
- Remove the
$TMPDIR/swamp-update-*folder on Ctrl+C (a 53 MB partial file was left behind).
The slow network was local (datacenter Wi-Fi), not the swamp server.
Version: 20261014.121640.0-sha.c5d1db96 (updated from 20260903.004401.0-sha.f2eefb58), macOS.

Thanks @jpisgeek-skillable for reporting this! We shipped: Make swamp update's download observable, resilient and clean. Stream it with progress (bytes, total, percent, speed) on stderr: a live spinner on a TTY, periodic lines otherwise. Detect a stall after 30s without bytes. Retry transient failures and resume from the bytes already written with HTTP Range (the artifact host supports it). Fail with a clear error that names the bytes received. On Ctrl+C, cancel through an AbortSignal so the existing finally removes the swamp-update temp dir and the command exits 130 without touching the installed binary. Also sweep swamp-update dirs that killed runs left behind, give fetchChecksum a timeout, and make the background autoupdate timeout really abort its download.. The fix has been merged and a release is on its way. We appreciate your contribution to swamp.
