#3877 Docs: vaults reference should say a wide local_encryption key file gets a warning

Opened by stack72 · 10/24/2026· Shipped 10/25/2026

Follow-up to swamp-club#3872. In content/manual/reference/vaults.md, the File Permissions section under the local_encryption provider says only that SSH key files are validated for 600 or stricter on Unix. After #3872 ships, the vault also checks an existing auto-generated .key or configured key_file on Unix: when it is wider than 0600 the key is still used, and a warning names the file, its mode and the chmod 600 fix. Suggested sentence after the SSH line: A .key or key_file wider than 600 is still used, but swamp logs a warning asking you to run chmod 600 on it. Windows is not checked for the key file.
