#2118 git: no way to set author/committer dates on commit

Opened by kagarmoe · 9/12/2026· Shipped 9/16/2026

The commit method sets author identity via 'git -c' flags but has no input for author or committer dates, and _lib/runner.ts spawns git via Deno.Command without an 'env' option, so GIT_AUTHOR_DATE / GIT_COMMITTER_DATE cannot be injected externally either.

Use case: reconstructing or simulating history, importing from another VCS, or any workflow where commit time is data rather than wall-clock now.

Worth noting that setting only the author date (as 'git commit --date' does) leaves a real committer timestamp in every object, which is invisible in default 'git log' and surprising later — so both want to be settable together.

Worked around locally by extending the type with a commit_at method that sets both env vars.
