#3387 Docs: grant and revoke changes reach every serve instance within one poll interval (S3/GCS and v2 filesystem)
Opened by stack72 · 10/13/2026
What changed
swamp-club#3371 (PR #3070) made swamp serve on a v2 filesystem datastore reload its policy snapshot when another process changes grants or groups, within one --datastore-poll-interval (default 30 s). That was already true on S3/GCS datastores. The manual describes neither.
The manual today says changes are staged until reload:
content/manual/explanation/swamp-serve.md, "Policy snapshot and reload": "The snapshot is rebuilt onswamp access reloador automatically on every change when--grant-reload autois active."content/manual/how-to/swamp-serve/manage-access-grants.md, "Reload the policy snapshot": "Grants are staged until you reload."
Behaviour to document (both reload modes)
- Changes made through this instance (
--serverto it) stay staged untilswamp access reloadin manual mode, and apply at once in auto mode. Unchanged. - Changes made by another process apply on this instance within one poll interval, in either mode. Another process means a peer serve instance on the same datastore, a local
swamp access grant/revoke/groupwithout--server, or a remote worker. Revokes do not needaccess reloadon every peer.- S3/GCS: the access data poller pulls
data/swamp/grantanddata/swamp/groupand reloads on a change. - v2 filesystem: serve checks the shared grant and group data for changes from other processes.
- v3 datastores allow one serve at a time, so this does not apply.
- S3/GCS: the access data poller pulls
- Network filesystems: with attribute caching (for example NFS
actimeo), a change can show up later than the poll interval.
Suggested pages
- Add a short "Multiple instances" paragraph to the "Policy snapshot and reload" section of the explanation page.
- Add a note under "Reload the policy snapshot" in
manage-access-grants.mdthataccess reloadapplies the local instance's staged changes. Peers pick up changes within one poll interval. - Optionally link both from
how-to/swamp-serve/run-multi-instance-deployment.md.

Fixed in swamp-club#1339: explanation/swamp-serve has a "Multiple instances" section; manage-access-grants, run-multi-instance-deployment and serve-flags now say peers pick up changes within one --datastore-poll-interval.
