#3442 swamp start: start a task from an existing issue (GitHub, Linear, Jira, swamp.club Lab)

Opened by mellens · 10/14/2026

Problem swamp start only takes a task as free text typed into the browser page. Most work already exists as an issue in a tracker (GitHub Issues, Linear, Jira, or a swamp.club Lab issue). To start on it I have to copy and paste the title and body into the task box by hand. That is tedious, and the agent only gets whatever I remembered to copy, without labels, comments or acceptance criteria.

Proposed solution

  • swamp start --issue <ref> (and an "import from issue" field on the start page) fetches the issue and writes it into the task brief at tasks/<date>-<slug>.md: title, body, labels, and optionally comments.
  • <ref> can be a URL (https://github.com/o/r/issues/12, a Linear/Jira URL, https://swamp-club.com/lab/3441) or a short form (gh:o/r#12, lab:3441, linear:ENG-123, jira:PROJ-45).
  • Trackers are pluggable rather than hard-coded. The @swamp/stagecraft tracker contract and its fetch-issue workflow already model "fetch an issue from tracker X", so swamp start could reuse them. Users pick or configure the tracker per workspace, using credentials from a vault.
  • The agent is opened on the imported brief as it is for a typed task.

Open questions

  • Should the core ship built-in GitHub and swamp.club Lab importers, with Linear and Jira coming from extensions?
  • Should the import work without stagecraft installed, or require it?

Alternatives considered

  • Paste the issue text by hand. This works today, but is tedious and loses labels and comments.
  • Set up a stagecraft factory with a tracker. That is heavy for "open this one issue in an agent".
