#3623 Docs: vault create and vault migrate refuse a local_encryption name with leftover storage
Opened by stack72 · 10/19/2026· Shipped 10/21/2026
swamp-club#3614 (swamp PR 3203, release 20261019.181241.0-sha.fd75f82f) changed vault create and vault migrate for local_encryption. The manual page content/manual/reference/vaults.md describes vault create local_encryption and the .swamp/secrets/local_encryption/{vault-name}/ layout but does not mention the new refusal.
What changed
- swamp vault create local_encryption NAME, and swamp vault migrate NAME local_encryption, now refuse when .swamp/secrets/local_encryption/NAME already holds anything: a key, secrets, annotations, or a file or symlink in the directory's place. An empty directory is still accepted.
- This happens when an earlier vault of that name lost its config but kept its directory (config deleted by hand, a vault remove whose push failed, a removal pulled into another checkout).
- Error, for create: Cannot create vault 'old': .swamp/secrets/local_encryption/old already holds a key or secrets left by an earlier vault named 'old'. Restore that vault's config to keep using them, or remove the directory to start this vault empty.
- For migrate the remedy reads: Remove the directory to migrate into an empty vault.
Suggested content
In the local_encryption section of reference/vaults.md (near the vault create examples), add a short note: create and migrate refuse a name whose secrets directory already holds storage; to keep those secrets restore the old vault's config, to start empty delete the directory and re-run.
