#956 Relax the profanity filter

Opened by keeb · 7/4/2026

Problem statement

The profanity filter is too aggressive: it rejects "kn*b" (the ordinary English word for a door handle / control dial, unmasked here only because the filter also rejects this very issue when spelled out). Blocking common innocent words breaks legitimate writing in issues and ripples — e.g. "the volume kn*b is misaligned".

Meta-evidence: this issue itself was rejected with HTTP 422 "Description contains inappropriate language" until the word was masked.

Proposed solution

Relax the filter to only reject clearly profane terms. Words with common innocent meanings should pass.

Alternatives

  • Allowlist specific words as they get reported (whack-a-mole).
  • Keep the strict filter (status quo): keeps rejecting normal vocabulary, including reports about the filter itself.
