#3397 Registry: undo hiding of unlicensed extensions; remove the no-license banner and badge (license is optional; keep the licensed=true opt-in filter)
Opened by skunk-ape · 10/13/2026· Shipped 10/13/2026
Re-scope of the license work (Seth and the team, 2026-10-13): a license is optional. It earns scorecard points, and nothing is hidden, refused or badged without one. Plan: Extension license proposal (https://claude.ai/code/artifact/8c256b86-ce33-4898-8b70-223ec3b827f2).
Problem
#3323 (live since 2026-10-13 15:55 UTC) hides extensions without a license from browsing. 59 public extensions are hidden today, including @hivemq/linear (190k pulls) and @stack72/system-extensions (147k). It also shows a "No license declared" banner on the extension page and an "Unlicensed" badge on listing cards.
Change (swamp-club)
- Remove the hiding. Every public extension appears in the listing again, whatever its license status. Remove the "Show unlicensed" toggle.
- Remove the "No license declared" banner and the "Unlicensed" badge. The scorecard in the right-hand box is the only place license status shows.
- Keep the search API's opt-in
licensed=truefilter. The default stays unfiltered, as today. - Remove manual text about hiding or a required license, including the #3323 additions saying a LICENSE file keeps an extension listed. Say instead that a license is optional and earns scorecard points.
- Remove or retire the stored listing flag and the startup recount if nothing else needs them; say which.
Acceptance
- All 59 currently hidden extensions are listed again, checked against production after deploy.
- No banner or badge anywhere. The scorecard still shows the license factors.
licensed=truestill filters, and the default is unfiltered.- UAT: the #3323 UAT tests that assert hiding, the toggle, the banner and the badge are replaced by tests asserting none of them, and that
licensed=truestill filters. The #3370 UAT's "no LICENSE file is hidden" assertion changes to "listed, scorecard shows license missing".
