Collapsible left rail and repositionable right rail in Lab

Opened by keeb · 4/15/2026· Shipped 4/16/2026

Problem

The Lab layout has fixed left and right rails that take up horizontal space whether or not you're using them. On smaller screens or when focusing on an issue's content, the rails crowd the main column and there's no way to reclaim that space or rearrange the layout to suit the task at hand.

Proposed Solution

  • Collapsible left rail: Add a toggle that collapses the left rail to an icon-only strip (or hides it entirely), with state persisted across sessions (localStorage).
  • Repositionable right rail: Let the user move the right rail — at minimum, swap it to the left side, or dock/undock it. Persist the preference.

Ideally both rails share a consistent collapse/expand affordance and keyboard shortcut.

Alternatives Considered

  • Relying on browser zoom or window resizing — doesn't address the desire to keep the main column wide while still showing rail content on demand
  • A single full-screen 'focus mode' toggle — simpler but less flexible than independent rail controls

Context

This comes up most when reading longer issue descriptions or comment threads, where the narrow main column forces excessive scrolling while the rails sit mostly empty.
